Patient discussions

Contact tracing and management of the patient's recent sex partners is an important consideration to prevent re-infection and further transmission.[39] This becomes especially important in cases of suspected disseminated gonococcal infection when the cultures may be negative. Patients are advised to refer their sex partners for evaluation and treatment. Patients should be told to avoid sexual intercourse for the duration of treatment, until they and their partners are tested and/or have completed a course of treatment. Otherwise they should be aware that they might become re-infected. They should be informed of the need for follow-up and rescreening. Patients may find online resources helpful.
