Prognosis

Most cases of acanthosis nigricans (AN) respond to treatment or regression of the underlying condition such as obesity, hyperinsulinaemia, or malignancy. Recurrence of the lesions often heralds recurrence of the underlying disease.[2][8] In patients with hereditary AN or no associated condition, treatment with topical or oral medications is usually effective and the lesions do not recur in most cases.[2][22][43][44] In patients treated with laser therapy or surgery, too few cases have been studied to accurately predict long-term recurrence rates.[40][41][42]
