Monitoring

Follow-up visits usually take place 6 to 8 weeks after initiation of therapy to review response to treatment, number of sexual attempts, and tolerability of the agent, and to discuss any new medical comorbidities or new medicines, which may warrant a change in therapy.

When a suboptimal response to the first agent is reported, ensure that the medicine was appropriately used before moving to alternate treatments.

Therapy should fail during four sexual attempts before moving to the next agent or therapy.

Counselling and re-education, regarding expectations, appropriate drug administration, and dose titration, have been shown to improve efficacy. As ED has a significant psychosocial impact on men, appropriate psychological evaluation in addition to appropriate medical treatment is important.[15]

Consider referral to consultants for complicated ED, failure of management, or focused psychosexual counselling.
