Patient discussions

Patients with food poisoning should be followed-up closely and educated about potential complications.

Because adequate hydration is the mainstay of therapy, all patients with inability to tolerate oral intake should be instructed to contact their provider or report back to the medical care centre.

Many diarrhoeal diseases are preventable by following simple hygiene rules and safe food preparation. Hand washing with soap is an effective way of preventing spread of illness and should be emphasised for caregivers of persons with diarrhoeal illnesses. Alcohol-based hand cleansers are a useful adjunct.[32][33] Human faeces must always be considered potentially hazardous, whether or not diarrhoea or potential pathogens have been identified.
