Emerging treatments

Herbal remedies

In some areas of the world, especially where access to health care is restricted through economic or geographic barriers, some patients may use herbal remedies. While evidence from randomised controlled trials is not yet available, initial studies have shown promise and have shown areas to focus research on in the future.[68]

Probiotics

There is a paucity of data to support routine use of probiotics in the treatment of acute infectious diarrhoea.[69] However, probiotics may help in the restitution phase, particularly following antibiotic usage.[55]
