Epidemiology

Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) is most common in children under the age of 5 years, and diminishes in frequency into adulthood. Prevalence has been estimated at 4.6% among US adults, which is higher among men and older adults and lower among Hispanic people.[1] Among older US adults (≥65 years) the prevalence is estimated at 5.5%, with a higher prevalence of 9.1% in those with a history of head and neck malignancy.[1] There is no gender predilection or ethnicity predominance.[2] The incidence of ETD is disproportionately high in patients with cleft palate - up to 79% in some reports.[3]
