Monitoring

Patients with oral mucositis should remain under the close observation of the treating medical oncologist, with input from other consultants as needed. The UK Oral Management in Cancer Care Group advises that monitoring should continue after the completion of cancer therapy, until OM is fully resolved or is progressing towards resolution.[33]

The use of validated tools (e.g., the World Health Organization mucositis scale, National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, Oral Mucositis Weekly Questionnaire-Head and Neck Cancer) to regularly assess oral pain and oral cavity health may be beneficial.[33][37][38][54]

The patient's ability to adequately eat and hydrate should also be regularly assessed, and nutritional support provided as necessary.
