Case history #1

A 57-year-old woman presents with severe mouth pain. She gives a recent history of receiving chemotherapy for colon cancer with the FOLFOX regimen (fluorouracil, folinic acid, and oxaliplatin). Her most recent chemotherapy cycle was 2 weeks ago. On examination, the oral mucosa appears generally erythematous, with ulcerations noted bilaterally on the lateral tongue and buccal mucosa.

Case history #2

A 66-year-old man presents with severe mouth and throat pain that is preventing him from eating solid foods. He gives a history of ongoing radiation treatment for cancer of the right base of the tongue. He has completed 6 weeks of a planned 7-week radiotherapy regimen. On clinical examination, the oral mucosa on the right side of the mouth appears erythematous, with large ulcerations covered by a pseudomembrane seen on the right lateral tongue and oropharynx.
