Screening

Routine screening in the general population is not recommended.

In certain circumstances, medical surveillance programmes may be implemented in a workforce at risk of sensitiser-induced occupational asthma (as part of secondary prevention). Typically these programmes include a symptom questionnaire, skin prick testing or serum-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE; in the few situations when the sensitiser is a high molecular weight allergen and the tests are available), and spirometry.[22] The specific components of such programmes that lead to any beneficial effect are unclear.
