Emerging treatments

Botulinum toxin type A

Botulinum toxin type A has been found to be an effective preventative treatment for migraine.[74][75] There are several reports in the literature of botulinum toxin type A being promising in chronic cluster headache.[75][76] A randomised placebo-controlled study is under way.[77]

Psilocybin

Psilocybin is an indoleamine hallucinogen that has been used by some patients with cluster headache. Infrequent and non-hallucinogenic doses have been reported to be efficacious.[1][78] Clinical trials are under way.[79]

Other calcitonin gene-related peptide antagonists

Other monoclonal antibodies against calcitonin gene-related peptide are being investigated for cluster headache. A phase 3 trial of eptinezumab for prevention for episodic cluster headache is under way.[80] Phase 3 trials of fremanezumab were terminated early.[1]
