Epidemiology

Coccygodynia is rare, and accounts for approximately 1% of patients presenting with musculoskeletal or spinal pain.[3] Concomitant low back pain is reported in up to 77% of cases.[4] Globally, true incidence is unknown, as coccygodynia is an under-recognised clinical entity. The male-to-female ratio is 1:5.[5][6] There are no known epidemiological differences with respect to ethnicity. The mean age of onset is 40 years, but it can occur at any age.[7][8] Most cases are post-traumatic (60% to 70%), the rest are non-traumatic or idiopathic (30% to 40%).[5][7][8]
