Anatomical penile abnormalities

Parents of infants and children with normal, physiological phimosis should be instructed to avoid forcible retraction of the foreskin for cleaning the glans penis, as external cleaning is sufficient until physiological phimosis resolves spontaneously with age.

Patients (or carers of paediatric patients) followed up postoperatively are given specific wound care and bandage instructions. Activity restrictions will vary based upon surgeon preference.

Paraphimosis patients are instructed on proper care of the foreskin and to return the foreskin to its normal anatomical position after urinating or cleaning the genitalia. Patients treated with surgical therapy such as circumcision or dorsal slit may require a postoperative clinic visit to evaluate postoperative healing.

Patients (or parents of paediatric patients) who undergo repair of hypospadias, penile curvature, and/or buried penis are given specific postoperative wound care and bandage instructions. Wound care instructions will vary depending upon whether skin grafting was needed. A urinary catheter may be left in place for several days after surgery. Activity restrictions will vary based upon the type of procedure performed.
