Primary prevention

Parenteral hydration should be strongly considered for all patients undergoing general surgical procedures requiring anaesthesia. Patients with pharmacologically induced xerostomia should increase water intake. Removal of sialoliths identified by routine dental x-rays is recommended. Massaging the affected gland or dilation of the affected duct with a lacrimal probe may be sufficient to remove superficial salivary stones. If these conservative approaches fail, a trans-oral incision with direct intraductal visualisation of the stone and removal is then indicated.
