Prognosis
Most patients with transient halitosis ultimately have some or complete resolution of symptoms following simple oral procedures. Those with persistent oral malodour secondary to dental, oral, nasopharyngeal, respiratory, gastrointestinal and other systemic disease will have a reduction of altered breath smell following treatment of their underlying disease. Unfortunately there remains no effective treatment for the unpleasant odour due to some metabolic disorders (e.g., trimethylaminuria).
