Primary prevention

As most oral malodour is the consequence of bacterial accumulation, primary prevention consists of removing as much bacterial plaque as possible via tooth cleaning, gentle tongue scraping, and antibacterial mouthwashes. Because bacterial accumulation is usually triggered by dental and periodontal disease, regular dental check-up and prompt treatment of dental disease can help to prevent halitosis. A diet free of onion, garlic, and similar foodstuffs will prevent associated transient blood-borne halitosis.

Secondary prevention

Diet modification, appropriate oral hygiene procedures, and prompt management of dental and periodontal disease will prevent a large number of cases of transient and persistent halitosis.
