Screening

Patients in the intensive care unit should be screened for ATN. This involves assessing serum creatinine and glomerular filtration rate. In addition, all patients at risk for ATN (diabetes mellitus, heart failure, advanced malignancy, atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease, or patients undergoing high-risk surgery) should be routinely screened for renal function, especially when a hospital inpatient.
