After surgical resection with curative intent, patients should have plasma vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) levels checked periodically to assess for tumor recurrence or metastasis.​ Rising VIP levels or recurrence of symptoms warrants further imaging workup to identify the source of recurrent disease.
