Monitoring

Reticulocytosis can be assessed at the end of the first week of therapy.[37] It is important to determine completeness of response after 8 weeks of therapy, when blood counts should have normalized.[69][70]

Homocysteine levels fall within a few days of therapy and may be used to assess treatment response.

Inadequate response indicates a coexisting cause of anemia, such as iron deficiency or vitamin B12 (cobalamin) deficiency.
