Patient discussions

Patients on H pylori eradication therapy that includes metronidazole should be instructed to avoid taking alcohol to avoid disulfiram-like reactions. They should also be instructed to follow up after stopping treatment. If documentation of H pylori infection eradication is required, this may be done at the end of 4 weeks with a urea breath test or at the end of 12 weeks with a fecal antigen test.

Patients with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-induced gastritis should be encouraged to switch to nontoxic medications, such as acetaminophen if possible, for analgesia. If NSAIDs are to be continued, patients should be advised to use smaller doses with less frequent dosing.
