Prognosis

Complete colonoscopic clearance of adenomas has been shown to decrease incidence of colorectal cancer by 70% to 90%.[60] Recurrence of polyps is common, however, with a risk of recurrence following endoscopic mucosal resection of 15%.[74] People with high-risk adenomas (any adenoma ≥10 mm, or with high-grade dysplasia or villous histology; or those with advanced sessile serrated lesions) have a three- to fourfold higher risk of incident colorectal cancer during follow-up, compared with people with no adenomas or low-risk adenomas.[49]

While the majority of colorectal adenomas (and other colorectal polyps) will remain asymptomatic throughout the patient's lifetime, the prevention of colorectal cancer through screening of the asymptomatic population and surveillance according to risk stratification guidelines is advocated in many countries.
