Primary prevention
Chronic insomnia disorder and delayed sleep-wake phase disorder may be prevented by:
Avoidance of bright light exposure in the evening for at least 2 hours prior to bedtime
Avoidance of caffeinated beverages at least 8 hours prior to sleep
Maintenance of good sleep hygiene
A regular schedule allowing for sufficient total sleep time with a fixed wake-up time and no naps that does not vary between school days, weekends, and vacation.[9]
