Monitoring
Viral labyrinthitis may warrant further follow-up if additional episodes of vertigo occur. Patients with labyrinthitis secondary to meningitis should be followed closely with audiometric and imaging studies to examine evidence of progressive hearing loss and signs of cochlear obstruction. The presence of cochlear obstruction on magnetic resonance imaging may warrant expedited cochlear implantation in the setting of bilateral severe to profound hearing loss.[49] Patients with bacterial meningitis who demonstrate otic capsule enhancement on gadolinium MRI should have their hearing assessed urgently as they are at significant risk of developing sensorineural hearing loss.[27]
