Epidemiology

The exact prevalence of pediatric migraine is unclear. One systematic review suggests a prevalence of 11% in the pediatric population.[3] Another source reports the prevalence in children and adolescents is 1% to 3% in 3- to 7-year-olds, 4% to 11% in 7- to 11-year-olds, and 8% to 25% by age 15 years.[4][5] Before puberty, migraines affect boys and girls equally. During puberty and onward, females are more often affected than males.[6] Studies in developed countries suggest migraine is the most common diagnosis among children presenting with headaches to a medical practitioner.[7]
