Monitoring

Initial follow-up is best within the first 1 to 4 weeks after commencing therapy. For positive airway pressure therapies, the purpose of the follow-up visit is to assess efficacy and adherence, and assist with any modifications needed to enhance these. If positive airway pressure management of obstructive sleep apnea is representative, long-term usage patterns are often determined by initial patient experiences, often within the first week or so of treatment initiation. Therefore, addressing comfort or efficacy issues early may result in improved patient adherence and effects. Afterward, annual follow-up, or sooner if there is a change in the underlying medical problem or in symptoms, is recommended. For pharmacologic and oxygen therapy, follow-up must be individualized.
