A 22-year-old woman presents with painful erythema of the skin on her shoulders, back, and posterior arms and legs. The skin is warm and diffuse small blisters are seen overlying her shoulders. She reports nausea, chills, and malaise. She had been sunbathing the previous day and fell asleep for several hours while lying on her stomach. She had applied "waterproof" sunscreen upon her arrival at the beach but did not reapply after swimming. When her symptoms began the prior evening, she applied aloe vera lotion liberally to all affected areas but reports that the pain and erythema worsened today.
