Epidemiology
The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that there are between 10 and 50 million cases of contact dermatitis due to poison ivy, oak, and sumac in the US every year.[11] There are various estimates that 60% to 80% of Americans are allergic to poison ivy, although this figure is likely to be lower in urban areas. About 10% to 15% of the population seem to be tolerant.[12] Sensitivity is less common in individuals who suffer from atopic dermatitis or psoriasis and seems to decline with age, provided further exposure can be avoided. Certain occupational groups are at increased risk (e.g., forestry workers, rural firefighters, and armed forces).[7][8][13] The cost of treatment has been estimated at between 226.50 US dollars (in primary care) and 648.95 US dollars (in the emergency department).[14] These plants are rarely found above an elevation of 5000 feet or in desert environments.[12]
