Emerging treatments

Anti-urushiol monoclonal antibody treatment

A study of a poison ivy vaccine found some efficacy in down-regulation of the allergic contact dermatitis response in sensitized rats after treatment with a monoclonal antibody to the urushiol antigen.[36]

Jewelweed

A study of the ethnopharmacologic use of jewelweed suggested it was helpful in preventing the development of dermatitis following poison ivy contact.[37]

Homeopathy

Patient exposure to poison ivy, oak, or sumac may prompt requests for information about the effectiveness of homeopathic remedies. Anecdotal case reports and two open studies suggest some possible benefit from homeopathic poison ivy in the management of chronic poison ivy sensitivity.[38] These findings have not been confirmed in formal clinical trials.
