Emerging treatments
Probiotics
Theoretically, colonization of the oropharynx with nonpathogenic strains of Streptococcus species could reduce the incidence of recurrent bacterial tonsillitis. There are some indications for fewer episodes of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal tonsillitis in children treated with oral probiotics, but randomized placebo-controlled studies are needed to establish their efficacy.[53] Addition of probiotics to penicillin treatment in patients with acute tonsillitis has not been shown to reduce symptom severity or to shorten disease duration.[53]
