Patient discussions

Patients should be aware of the potential risk of recurrence of any type of TOS and contact their physician if they have any symptoms: aching or burning pain, involving the neck, shoulder, parascapular area, anterior chest wall, arm, and/or hand; numbness or tingling in the arm or hand; or swelling and cyanotic discoloration in the arm or hand.

Patients should also adhere to any exercises as directed by their physical therapist to help prevent recurrence. Optimizing and maintaining posture, avoiding repetitive working practices, losing weight, and correcting sleeping positions can reduce compression to the thoracic outlet, reducing the likelihood of recurrence.
