Etiology

Traumatic knee injuries

Traumatic knee injuries are usually differentiated based on contact versus noncontact mechanisms of injury. In addition, they can be defined as high-velocity or low-velocity knee injuries, especially in knee dislocations. The majority of symptomatic knee injuries in young patients are traumatic, while in older patients they are more commonly nontraumatic.

Infection

Infection of the knee can be due to recent surgery, recent open fractures, or lacerations. There may be a history of increased pain, warmth, or swelling around the joint.
