Patient discussions
Following an episode of acute angle-closure glaucoma, patients must follow up regularly, as instructed, with an ophthalmologist to check the patency of the iridotomies. Signs and symptoms of repeat acute angle closure should be explained to the patient and they should be told to return promptly or attend the emergency department if they suspect a repeat episode. If damage to the optic nerve has been noted, the patient should be advised that they may need to start treatment for chronic glaucoma. Patients with chronic angle-closure glaucoma must follow up regularly for chronic glaucoma treatment.
Psychosocial function and mobility issues can arise particularly early in patients with glaucoma (e.g., with peripheral field loss). Provide information about vision rehabilitation to patients with any degree of vision loss, because even an early loss can be associated with disability.
