Secondary prevention

In women with recurrent superficial vein thrombosis (SVT), avoidance of oral contraceptives or other hormonal agents should be advised.

Varicose vein surgery may be feasible after acute treatment of SVT of an incompetent saphenous vein with associated varicose veins or in the case of repeated episodes.[61] Superficial venous incompetence with stasis is a modifiable risk factor for the development of SVT, which may be treated with minimal morbidity.

Though the evidence linking long-haul airplane travel to SVT is controversial, it is prudent to advise patients with a history of SVT to ambulate regularly during the flight. Prevention with compression stockings and/or prophylactic doses of low molecular weight heparin in very high-risk patients may be useful.[91][92]
