Epidemiology

AR is not as common as aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation. One US study showed a prevalence of 13% in men and 8.5% in women with most being trace or mild; a prevalence of 15.6% was reported in African-Americans.[3] Prevalence increases with age in both sexes.[4] Prevalence of moderate to severe AR has been estimated to be about 0.5% of the total US population.[5]

Data from a large registry show that both men and women have equal proportion of different morphologic types of bicuspid aortic valve, but men tend to present with moderate to severe AR while women tend to present more commonly with moderate to severe aortic stenosis.[6]
