Prognosis
Life expectancy for people with vascular dementia is significantly shortened, with a mortality similar to or worse than that of people with Alzheimer disease.[7] The mean survival time after Alzheimer diagnosis is estimated to be 5·8 years, whereas it is on average 1·1 years lower among patients with non-Alzheimer dementia, with no differences by subtype.[127]
Specific treatments for cognitive symptoms have not been found to be effective. In almost all patients, dementia of any cause is irreversible.[64]
