Primary prevention

  • Enteroviruses are spread by the fecal-oral route and hand washing may help prevent infection.[3][4]

  • Arboviral infection may be prevented by avoiding vectors (ticks or mosquitoes): for example, insecticide-treated bed nets.[4]

  • Routine immunization of infants for mumps.[4]

Secondary prevention

Secondary prophylaxis with acyclovir/valacyclovir has not been shown to decrease the risk of recurrence and is not recommended.[3][63]
