Patient discussions
Reassure patients about the self-limiting nature of the condition, and that symptoms usually clear within 7 to 10 days. Rest and regular fluid intake are recommended. Advise patients to return if symptoms worsen or if they exceed the expected recovery time.
General hygiene measures are recommended to limit the spread. Tissues or handkerchiefs contaminated with nasal secretions should be hygienically disposed of. Hands should be washed thoroughly during food preparation and at meal times. Time off work or school may be advised to limit spread to others.
