Prognosis
The prognosis is usually excellent with remission occurring within 6 months of treatment following repeated phlebotomy or low-dose hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine. Recurrences sometimes occur and can be treated in the same manner.
In patients with PCT and hepatitis C, the development of highly effective direct-acting antivirals has improved prognosis, and successful treatment of hepatitis C virus may eliminate the need for any additional PCT treatment.
