Monitoring
Plasma or urine porphyrins should be monitored at approximately 6-month intervals to permit early retreatment of any recurrence. The risk for hepatocellular carcinoma is increased and monitoring by hepatic imaging and alpha-fetoprotein at 6- to 12-month intervals has been recommended.[13][31][32] This increased risk is in part related to associated susceptibility factors such as hepatitis C and the degree of hepatic fibrosis.
During repeated phlebotomies, monitoring includes serum ferritin levels and hemoglobin or hematocrit levels.
