Prognosis
The outcome of enteric fever is usually good when effective antimicrobial therapy is provided in a timely manner, with a fatality rate of <1% and a low rate of serious complications. A higher fatality rate has been reported in endemic countries; in one review the estimated fatality rate was 2.49% overall and 4.45% in hospitalized patients in endemic countries.[85]
