Patient discussions

Advise patients with acute bacterial prostatitis to complete their course of antibiotic treatment even if they are feeling better. Courses of treatment are frequently several weeks long, particularly for patients who present initially with severe symptoms, and completing the course offers the best chance of eradicating the infection.

For most patients, there is no specific advice that may be offered to help them avoid a worsening of their symptoms, although men who practice anal intercourse should be advised to avoid the practice or use a condom to avoid further episodes of bacterial infection.

When a patient does have an exacerbation of his symptoms, he should be advised to seek treatment at the earliest opportunity, as this allows the best chance of symptomatic improvement.
