Epidemiology
Prostatitis is often regarded as a disease of older men, but in the US it is the most common urologic diagnosis in men <50 years of age.[6] It is also the third most common urologic diagnosis in men >50 years old.[7] The prevalence of prostatitis-like symptoms varies widely in different parts of the world, but data is limited by differences in the measures and criteria used.[2] One US-based study reported an overall prevalence of prostatitis (combined acute and chronic) of 2.7%.[8] Of men diagnosed with prostatitis, less than 10% have a proven bacterial infection and <1% have acute bacterial prostatitis.[9]
