Patient discussions
Discuss the benefits and risks of disease-modifying therapies with the patient, and take their preferences into account when deciding on treatment. Ensure that this discussion continues throughout the disease course.
The influence of modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise on the development and course of MS are increasingly recognized. Encourage patients to stay as active as possible with some form of regular exercise. Research on specific dietary interventions is ongoing. Generally, patients should be encouraged to follow a healthy diet with adequate fruits and vegetables.
Offer patients regular follow-ups with primary care physicians as well as their neurologist; data indicate that the presence and worsening of such conditions as obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and high cholesterol are associated with increased disability in MS.[219]
At an appropriate time (before any expected impairments in cognition communication, or mental capacity), discuss advance care planning and power of attorney with the patient and their family members or caregivers.[53][191]
Patients who have been diagnosed with MS will find a great deal of information available to them, much of it conflicting and confusing.
A useful source of information is the local chapter of the National MS Society, which provides services as well as information.
