Prognosis

There are no good data on the natural history or recurrence rates of coccygodynia. In general, post-traumatic coccygodynia responds better to surgical therapy than idiopathic coccygodynia.

Acute coccygodynia (symptoms <2 months) can resolve spontaneously. Chronic coccygodynia (symptoms ≥2 months) can persist for years and cause severe disabling pain that significantly decreases quality of life.

Coccygodynia is under-recognized, and patients may be subjected to incorrect diagnoses or ineffective therapies.
