Patient discussions

Patients should be advised to seek prompt medical attention for episodes of infection. In some circumstances, providing patients with a home supply of antibiotics, and advising them to begin the course at the first sign of infection, may be considered.

Administration of live vaccines should be avoided in patients with severe combined immunodeficiency or other combined immunodeficiency states; however, there must be a risk/benefit discussion with the patient regarding the risk of potential infection.[83]

Advice regarding foreign travel should be given with respect to receiving immunizations, taking antibiotics abroad, drinking only safe or boiled water, arranging appropriate medical cover in advance of travel, and ensuring continuation of any immunoglobulin infusions.
