Primary prevention

Parenteral hydration for all patients undergoing general surgical procedures requiring anesthesia should be strongly considered. Patients with pharmacologically induced xerostomia should increase water intake. Removal of sialoliths identified by routine dental x-rays is recommended. Massaging the affected gland or dilatation of the affected duct with a lacrimal probe may be sufficient to remove superficial salivary stones. If these conservative approaches fail, a transoral incision with direct intraductal visualization of the stone and removal is then indicated.
