Patient discussions
Patients prescribed serotonergic agents should be provided with information about serotonin toxicity and informed about other medications (i.e., other serotonergic agents) that should be avoided while they are taking these medications. For example, the most common cause of severe toxicity is a drug-drug interaction between a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) and a selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Patients should be followed up a few days after increasing the dose or starting a new drug, and should be checked annually thereafter if still taking the drug.[32]
