Screening
Primary care screening
Primary care physicians may screen asymptomatic patients for anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use by taking a careful history. This is unlikely to be a routine activity but may be prompted by learning the patient is an avid bodybuilder or by noticing substantially increased muscle mass on physical examination.
Sports authority screening
Many sports governing bodies (e.g., Olympic committee) mandate screening of athletes for AAS use. The tests done by World Anti-doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratories are constantly evolving. WADA annually revises its list of prohibited substances. World Anti-Doping Agency: prohibited list Opens in new window
