Criteria

Clinical stages

As minimal change disease (MCD) is the most common type of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (NS) in children, the clinical diagnostic criteria for MCD follow the diagnostic criteria for NS.

Initial presentation[3]

  • Nephrotic-range proteinuria (first morning or 24-hour protein-creatinine ratio ≥200 mg/mmol or ≥2 mg/mg or ≥3+ dipstick).

Relapse[3]

  • Recurrence of nephrotic-range proteinuria (≥3+ dipstick for 3 consecutive days in children).

Frequent relapse[3]

  • ≥2 relapses per 6 months within 6 months of disease onset or ≥4 relapses per 12 months in any subsequent 12-month period.
