Escherichia coli and Listeria may cause sepsis in neonates.
Other causative organisms include group A streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae.
There are no differentiating signs or symptoms.
INVESTIGATIONS
Blood or other body fluid cultures positive for specific organism.
Endocarditis caused by other organisms

There are no differentiating signs or symptoms.
INVESTIGATIONS
Blood or valve tissue cultures positive for specific organism.
Neonatal cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection
SIGNS / SYMPTOMS
Cause of neonatal sepsis.
There are no differentiating signs or symptoms.
INVESTIGATIONS
Serology, viral culture, or nucleic acid amplification tests are positive for CMV.
Neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection
SIGNS / SYMPTOMS
Cause of neonatal sepsis.
There are no differentiating signs or symptoms.
INVESTIGATIONS
Viral culture or nucleic acid amplification tests are positive for HSV.
Toxic shock syndrome
SIGNS / SYMPTOMS
There are no differentiating signs or symptoms.
INVESTIGATIONS
Blood or other body fluid cultures are positive for specific organism (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes).
