Emerging treatments

Newer anthelmintics

The efficacy of benzimidazoles has decreased over time and newer treatments may be needed in the future. Drugs such as tribendimidine, oxantel, moxidectin, and nitazoxanide are being investigated in clinical trials (in combination regimens) for this indication.[48][58]

Sodium diatrizoate/meglumine diatrizoate

A solution of sodium diatrizoate/meglumine diatrizoate (commonly known as Gastrografin®) administered via nasogastric tube (alongside standard anthelmintic treatment) has been found to help alleviate partial bowel obstruction due to ascariasis, because the hyperosmolar solution can aid in separating masses of entangled worms. A study found that it shortened the time to resolution of obstruction and the length of hospital stay.[54] It is no longer available in the US and may not be available in other countries.
